Intro: Travel Blog #10

Mein Aufruf die Zukunft von Raj zu supporten hat sich in der Hood rumgesprochen. Auch wenn Kathmandu die nepalesische Hauptstadt ist und somit um die 1 Million Menschen fasst, sind die einzelnen ‘Bezirke’ wie kleine aneinandergereihte Dörfer. Jeder kennt jeden und speziell hier in Thamel bin ich mittlerweile gut connected, so dass Aktivitäten schnell das Lauffeuer machen. Das ist in 99% aller Fälle auch oft super hilfreich, doch wenn man eine Überraschung plant eher das Gegenteil 😉 Also wusste Raj schon bevor ich ankam, dass ein eigenes Fahrrad auf ihn warten wuerde verbunden mit meiner Rueckkehr. Gar nicht weiter wild, changen wir eben ein bisschen den Plan, was ganz gut ist, denn daraus ergibt sich eine pädagogisches Mittel. Der neue Plan ist wie folgt: Eine passende Englischschule finden und ein geeignetes Fahrrad.

Dieses bekommt Raj nach ersten Lernerfolgen als Bonus und zur Motivation.

Direkt nach meiner Ankunft besucht mich Raj im Hinterhof meines Vertrauens, weil er weiß, dass er mich dort antrifft. Er bringt mir einen grünen Schal wie er zum Empfang oder Abschied von Gästen dem buddhistischen Brauch nach üblich ist, als Zeichen des Respekts und der Wiedersehensfreude. Am nächsten Tag bereits mache ich mich auf die Suche nach einer Schule, die Englisch unterrichtet, bezahlbar und für Raj gut erreichbar ist. Den Zuschlag erhält das Valley Institute 5min mit dem Rad und 10min zu Fuß von Thamel erreichbar. Ich entscheide mich für den ersten Monat für Privatunterricht, so dass durch die Einzelbetreuung eine gute Basis geschaffen werden kann. Aufgrund der Charity work kann ich 5000 NR (43€) statt 6000 NR (51€) aushandeln. Schulbeginn ist der 05.01.2016. Täglich (Sonntag-Freitag / samstags ist frei) eine Stunde, immer morgens von 9-10Uhr. Ich halte telefonisch Kontakt mit dem Institut, weiß dadurch, dass Raj jeden Tag vor Ort ist und er ein aufgewecktes Bürschchen ist, das schnell lernt und aufnahmefähig ist. Gute News, zu meiner Freude. Aber nichts überraschendes, denn das Motivation, Ehrgeiz und Wille in ihm steckt, konnte ich vom ersten Moment an spüren. Gründe, die die Entscheidung ihn zu unterstützen, einfach machten. Denn Hilfe bedarf immer Mitarbeit.

Raj geht nun schon 3 Wochen zur Schule. So oft er kann, kommt er mich besuchen und ich bin stolz über jedes neues Wort, dass er spricht. Wir brauchen zwar nach wie vor einen Übersetzer, wenn es wichtige Dinge zu besprechen gibt, aber einfache Konversationen bekommen wir nun schon ganz alleine hin. Das sind tolle Fortschritte. In der Zwischenzeit habe ich mich auf die Suche nach einem Fahrrad gemacht. Budget-konform, passende Größe, gebraucht aber im guten Zustand sollte es sein. Am Ende habe ich das beste Angebot im Hinterhof meines Vertrauens gefunden. Zwei Räder waren zur Auswahl, Raj durfte mitentscheiden. Seine Wahl fiel auf das grüne Rad, auch wenn dieses noch repariert werden musste. Bei der Farbe grün springt natürlich mein Green-Shiva-Herz J So sollte es also sein. Am nächsten Tag war es zum Kauf bereit. 30.000 NR haben wir verhandelt (25.000 das Rad und 5000 die Reparatur). Mein Budget ist knapp und der Unterricht mindestens genauso wichtig. Somit treffen wir im Gespräch mit Raj die Einigung, dass er 5000 von den 30.000 Rupies von seinem Gehalt zahlt. Sein Idee, was mich sehr freut und zudem den Wert des Rads für ihn erhöht. Da er selbst dafür gearbeitet hat, weiß er sein neues Eigentum dann noch mehr zu schätzen. Der Kauf ist besiegelt und Raj glücklich. Am nächsten Tag gehe verabrede ich mich morgens um 08:30 mit Raj, um mit ihm zusammen in den Unterricht zu gehen. Gesagt getan. Auf dem Weg kaufen wir Obst und Frühstück. Raj Lehrerin ist super. Sie ist Schauspielerin in einer Theatergruppe, die diese Art der Kunst als Tool einsetzen, um Erdbebenopfer zu helfen. Ein sehr interessantes Konzept, dass mich am Tag darauf in das Büro von *israAID* bringt. Aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Da sie zu spät ist, springe ich ein und unterrichte Geographie. Nachdem die sieben Kontinente samt Globus an der Tafel sind, kommt Sunaina auch schon und springt in ihre Rolle. Nach der Stunde beraten wir gemeinsam den weiteren Verlauf. Anhand des Future-Budgets, dass ich dank unseren Green Shiva Supportern zur Verfügung habe, und seiner Entwicklung, einigen wir uns auf Gruppenunterricht ab Februar. So kann ich mehr Monate fördern. 2000 Rupies = 18€ / Monat.

Die tollste Neuigkeit ist, dass ich dank unserem lokalen Teammember Tashi auch bereits einen potentiell zukünftigen Arbeitgeber in petto habe: Himalaya Single Track, eine der größten Trekking Companies hier in Nepal. Der Inhaber freut sich sehr über unseren Support des Jungen und ist gewillt, ihn –wenn die Zeit reif ist- als Guide für Mountainbike-Touren zu engagieren. Wenn das keine guten Aussichten sind!

Raj ist 12 Jahre. Wenn er am Ball bleibt, seine Fahrradskills auf seinem eigenen Bike trainiert und optimiert sowie sich der englischen Sprache annimmt, dann ist ihm eine Zukunft im Tourismus-Sektor gewiss. Dann muss er nicht mehr Teller waschen bis Mitternacht in einer Bar in Thamel, wie er es aktuell tut, um Geld zu verdienen und sein Leben lang tun müsste ohne Zukunftschancen.

Green Shiva Nepal Travel Blog 3.2016: FUTUREKID Raj – english version

Intro: Travel Blog #10

My request to support the future of Raj has circulated in the hood. Even Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal with round about 1 million inhabitants, are the little districts like little aligned villages. Everybody knows everyone and particular here in Thamel I am quite well connected by now that this kind of activities are spreading like wildfire. That is very useful, mostly, exclude you are planning a surprise. That means Raj already knew about my plans to buy him a bike before I returned to Asia again. No problem, so I had have to change the plan a little bit, with a good side-effect: developing an educational tool out of it. New plan: Finding an adequate English school and a suitable bike which he will get after his first learning results like a bonus and for further motivation.

Directly after my arrival Raj has visited me in the backyard of my choice. He brought me this green scarf as a sign of respect and as a warm welcome like it is common for the tradition. The next day I started looking for a suitable language institute which is payable and in his distance. The Valley Institute made it because of it´s 10mins walking distance. I decided to choose the private class for the first month to create a good basis for next month of group classes. His new school-life started on the 5^th of January, daily from 9-10. I am in regularly contact with the institute to be informed about his developments. And the feedback of his teacher is representable: Raj is a clever boy who is very receptive. Good news! Even not suprising ones because I knew that there are motivation, the will and ambitions contained in him. The reasons why it was easy to decide to support him. Because help always needs cooperation.

Raj already goes to school now since three weeks. He visits me everytime when he is free and I am proud about every single new word he can speak. Nevertheless we still need an interpreter for speaking about important topics, but little conversations we can have on our own now. What a great progress.

Meanwhile I was looking for a bike for him: conformable to the budget, suitable size, used but in a good condition. The best offer regarding to this points I found in the backyard of my choice. There were two bikes for selection and Raj could has participated in decision. He choosed the green one, a colour for which my green-shiva-heart jumps for joy. This is how it should be. Because of my project-budget is limited and the English classes are important too, we reached an agreement that Raj will give NR 5000,- of the total costs of NR 30.000,- Happy that this was his idea and it even increase the value of the bike. Like this it is more easy for him to value it. Because he also had have to work for his new property. So the buying was done and Raj was happy. The next day I went with him to school to check how it goes and to make further plans with the teacher. Sunaina is a great woman, who is an theatre actor by the way. Because she was a bit late that day it was me jumping in her role and starting the lessons with some geography. After having painted the seven continents on the blackboard, she arrived. After the lesson we consulted together about the process of his learnings. Regarding to his developments and to my budget we decided to switch to group class after 5^th of February. So I am able to effort the next months.

The best news is that i already hav a potential future employer in petto, thanks to our local teammember Tashi: Himalaya Single Track, one of the biggest trekking companies in town. The owner is happy about our support and he is looking forward to engage him as a guide for mountain bike treks in the future. These are bright prospects! What a great chance.

Raj is 12 years now. If he stays tuned, trains his biking skills and learns better English, then his future in the tourism sector is save. And then he doesn’t have to washes the dishes in the night bar anymore what he does actually to earn some money and what he should have to do his whole life without any future chances.
